The short movie is made for a plant study at the University of Amsterdam, where the plant defense mechanisms are being researched. The movie shows one of their findings: a plant’s defense against a plague of mites. By giving off odors to hungry predators, the plant tries to free itself from the invasive mites. This story is told with the help of a pen plotter which takes you on a journey into the world of plants and insects through illustration and text drawn on a paper roll that functions as the movies ‘film’. Due to the use of a pen plotter, digital illustrations attain an analogue feeling.

Implausible Things #1, Rita Macedo, experimental, 2012, Germany, 12 min

The conception we have of ourselves and the world - and that of our relation to the world - appears, admittedly or not, to obey the stipulation that everything must have a cause or a reason to be as it is and not otherwise. What if we reverse this perspective on things and admit an illogical and irrational principle instead? A principle based on the absence of reason, through which nothing would be impossible, not even the unthinkable. Hyperchaos as the primary absolute. Implausible things #1 is the first part of the series that seeks to reflect upon human existence, the absurd, randomness and pure contingency.
