09:00 Conference opening. Challenges and New Approaches to Multi-media Storytelling and Traditional Narratives

Elizabate Palasiosa, Marta Kontina, StoryHub Latvia (LV)

During more than 10 years of actively working in the different fields of creative industries, we have experienced significant development and changes in the way we tell stories and consume the content. It is obvious that traditional narratives and forms of distribution reach less audiences and that the young generation interacts with the world and content in a different way. There is no other way but to take that into serious consideration and look for new forms of storytelling and distribution in order to tell the stories that we or other filmmakers are so passionate about. Other creative industries seem to be more open to the new vibes and changes, so there is an open question – why filmmakers tend to stay more conservative?

09:20 VR Experiences from a Cinematic Perspective

Maria Herholdt Engermann, Mannd (DK)

We live in an exciting age where media is a huge - if not completely integrated - part of our everyday life. As innovative creative beings, we seek new digital experiences that can communicate our message(s) across to our audience, leaving a memorable mark. With the forthcoming of immersive media, thereby virtual reality (VR), a completely new spectrum of opportunities have opened up to our benefit.

Despite not being a new medium, VR has only recently become accessible to most. We are still in the infant pioneering stage of defining the definition, framework and terminology of VR, being given a new set of tools to tell stories. But how can we deal with this new medium from a cinematic perspective? And how can we expand our alter? What are the strengths of starting to collaborate in an embroidered environment of film, theatre, gaming, performance art, amongst many others, to create hybrid experiences? What is a hybrid VR experience even in the first place? And are these types of experiences the next era of film experiences? In order to reflect on these many hows and whats, the talk is based on theories by Christian Jantzen, Scott A. Lucas and Mel Slater. The talk will circulate topics of the psychology of experiences, experience design and sense of embodiment in VR, illustrated through current hybrid projects.

10:20 VR is More Than a Novelty

Rein Zobel, Maru VR Productions (EE)

Virtual Reality is an emerging medium which has its own rules. But as the technology is so new, creators have a hard time approaching it. Because there is no tradition or discipline attached to VR, the only way to create seems to be to use the rules of other disciplines. Yet VR content can be so much more.

10:40 Cross-innovating with VR & AR

Sergio Oliviera, KhoraVR (DK)

The VR & AR industries are still in its infancy, making it hard for startups to hold on the market. In 2 years, Khora has been able to foster a community of VR & AR enthusiasts and expand the underdeveloped VR & AR market, by pushing the technology boundaries in different areas. From Healthcare to Education, Tourism to Marketing, true innovation will come, one project at a time.

11:00 Audio-visual Industry Trends and Innovations in Lithuania: What's Missing to Go Global?

Darius Sakalauskas, Nebula Cluster (LT)

Lithuania's audio-visual industry recently presented several innovative and interesting cases such as VR films, installations, apps, etc. Are they of the of the level of international quality and whats missing to go global? Keynote will present an overview of the industry, its main players, case by case examples and evaluate their future potential.

12:20 Location Based Documentary in AR

Gunnar Liestol, University of Oslo (NO)

Location-based media in general and Mobile Augmented Reality in particular challenge the way we tell stories. The talk will discuss the relationship between audiovisual narratives and archives/databases when reconstructing historical events on location. Experimental productions will be presented and examined.

12:50 VR: for Us by Us. Importance of the Community

Madis Vasser, EEVR (EE)

For the past years Madis has been involved in the industry from many angles, so he has seen both the dev community and the government side, so to speak. Madis will address the different ways we could use (and are using) VR in small countries and why the content should be made locally (otherwise we don't exist - try Google Earth VR and you see no signs of civilization in Estonia).

14:00 Digital Storytelling as a Tool for Societal Change

Sandra Coumans, !DROPS (BE)

The world is in a constant flux. For some people, those changes can be overwhelming or threatening. For others, those changes are a breeding ground for new opportunities. Keeping co-creation and the human touch in mind, Sandra Coumans will give some examples of how digital storytelling, and specifically interactive storytelling, is used to create a connection between innovative solutions and current societal issues.

PARALLEL SESSIONS:

14:30-16:00 First Steps: Build your Own Digital Story - practical workshop

Led by Sandra Coumans, !DROPS (BE)

In telling personal and/or societal stories through digital means, we are able to convey our message and connect with our audience in a different way. This workshop will delve into that topic and is very hands-on: participants will explore the stories that they have to tell and will experiment with putting them in a digital format. The workshop is concluded by a discussion about the characteristics of the different media and some of the newest developments.

With the support of Creative Europe Desk Latvia, Media Office.

14:30-17:30 Prototyping for Virtual Reality
 - practical workshop

Led by Laura Leon & Timo Kallaste, MobiLab (EE)

The workshop will cover the basics of extended realities, introduce the design process, the end result would be a web-based VR prototype. Participants will understand the design process for XR experiences, HCI considerations for said platforms and have the skills to prototype for VR on a beginner level. We will provide sources for the participants to continue working on their prototype and gain more skills on the medium outside of the given workshop.

With the support of MobiLab.

14:30-16:30 3D Graphics for Augmented Reality - practical workshop

Led by Maxim Velichkin & Haralds Mikelsons, Accenture (LV)

Augmented Reality can become a real helper in our life. It actually becomes a part of our reality, and t it’s up to us, how it will look like. We can shape the Augmented Reality with the help of 3D graphics, and we have almost complete freedom to visualize our imagination. But still, we have some hardware and software limitations which we have to take into account.
During this workshop, I will be happy to share my experience and some approaches which can help us to overcome these limitations, and show the process of 3D assets creations for Augmented reality from scratch.

With the support of Accenture Latvia.
