LATVIAN WANDERERS

LATVIAN WANDERERS

2ANNAS “Latvian Wanderers” programme includes two feature films that were made within 20 years of one another and that show two completely different perspectives on Latvian migration history. In each of their own undeniably artistic ways and despite being made 20 years apart, both talk about “Latvian wanderers,” perhaps the most relevant subject of discussion in Latvian society both then and now.

TIDE, Ivars Zviedris, documentary, Latvia, 2009, 80''

Valdis and his snail collectors are a small part of the many Latvian people that will be wrtitten in the history of Latvia the same way as Soviet times and Ulmanlaiki. This time of Ireland has the same magic and peculiar feeling as in the past. Scars will be left in the family trees of Latvian’s same was as they are being made today.
The collection of snails is defined by TIDE. When the see retires they pick but when it comes back they sleep. The sea of Ireland is four times more salty that the Baltic sea. Life in this place is also is always a bit more salty than at home. Nerve ends are loose for everybody. For some they are more naked but for others - a bit tarnished from the salt.
